Dr. Donzella Dixon is the newest member of the First Medcare Inc team in Canarsie, Brooklyn.

“I am excited to join the Canarsie community to create relationships with patients that will offer the most effective and individualized care. I am especially committed to healthcare promotion and prevention because there is evidence that this significantly reduces the emotional, social and financial costs of healthcare in the population,” Dixon said.

At First Medcare she will be focusing on the prevention and treatment of chronic medical conditions such as Cardiovascular disease, Diabetes, Hypertension, Hypercholesterolemia and Obesity. She views these as the primary determinants of morbidity and mortality affecting the immigrant Caribbean population at this time. She will treat patients ages 18 and older.

Born and raised in the island of Jamaica, Dixon most recently served as an attending physician with Health Quest Medical Practice in the Mid -Hudson Valley of New York. There she collaborated with physicians and other health care practitioners to manage hospitalized and out- patients with various medical conditions. She was also involved in the training of physician assistant students doing their rotation through Internal Medicine.

Prior to this, she worked with South Island Medical Associates in Brooklyn, NY, Betances Health Center in Manhattan, New York as a teacher and supervisor of family medicine residents from Beth Israel Medical Center’s Family Medicine program on New York’s Lower East Side. She also oversaw nurse practitioner students from Columbia Presbyterian Nursing School in Washington Heights completing clinical rotations.

Dixon earned her medical degree from the University of the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica, and holds a master’s degree in public health from Columbia University in New York. She completed her residency in internal medicine at the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn.

In her spare time, she enjoys gardening, floral arrangement and collecting stamps.
