What is GERD?
GERD stands for gastroesophageal reflux disease, a chronic condition that occurs when stomach acid moves backward from the stomach into the esophagus. Over time, the acid can begin to erode the lining of the esophagus, causing permanent tissue damage and increasing the risk of esophageal cancer. While symptoms of GERD may be managed with over-the-counter products, it is a serious condition that requires medical management to prevent serious complications from developing. GERD is typically diagnosed with a review of symptoms followed by an endoscopy to evaluate the lining of the esophagus.
